A Family Tradition of Authentic Chinese Cooking in the Heart of Barry

About Us

We’re a family-run Cantonese takeaway from Guangzhou, cooking fresh on Broad Street in Barry. Every dish is made with care, tradition and the same focus on quality that built our name.

Our
Story

We come from Guangzhou, the heart of southern China and the birthplace of Cantonese cuisine. Growing up there, food was more than just dinner - it was how our family showed love. A mother handing you the best piece of meat, a grandparent placing a dumpling on your plate - those gestures meant “I care for you.” That is how we learned to cook, not from recipes in books but from standing side by side in a busy kitchen, listening, tasting, and feeling when a dish was right.

When we moved to Barry, we brought those traditions with us. In 2019, we opened Wong’s with one hope: to share the food we grew up with and the feeling of welcome that always surrounded our table. Every order is our way of saying “you’re part of the family now.”

Why "Wong's"?

Many people assume Wong’s is simply a family name, but there’s a deeper story behind it. In Cantonese, Wong (黃 / 王) can mean “yellow” or “king” - both symbols of good fortune, prosperity, and gold. For generations, names like Wong have carried an auspicious meaning in Chinese culture, associated with luck and warmth.

We chose “Wong’s” not as a surname, but as a blessing. It felt like the right name for our kitchen - a simple, friendly word that carries the wish of good food, good luck, and comfort in every meal we serve.

Cooking the Way We Were Taught

We learned to cook at home, not from recipes in books but by watching, tasting and listening. Cantonese food is about balance, freshness and timing. We still carry those lessons into every dish we serve today.

Everything fresh

Vegetables are chopped by hand, meats are marinated in-house, sauces are mixed from scratch.

Cooked to order

No shortcuts - every stir-fry begins when you order, and we don’t let it leave the wok until it’s just right.

Flavour with care

Cantonese cooking isn’t heavy or overcomplicated. It’s about letting fresh ingredients speak, with just the right seasoning to bring them alive.

5* Hygiene Rating

Food safety and hygiene have always been non-negotiables for us. We understand how important trust is when it comes to food, and that’s why we work hard behind the scenes to keep everything spotless. We’ve earned a 5-star hygiene ratingfrom the Food Standards Agency, and it reflects the kind of kitchen we’d want to eat from ourselves. There are no surprises, no corner-cutting, and nothing done just for show - we clean because it’s how we were raised to keep a kitchen, not because someone’s checking.

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like behind the scenes, we’d tell you it’s busy, warm, and smells great. Everything from the way we store our ingredients to how we prep for a busy evening has been thought through. It might not be glamorous work, but it’s honest, and it means that when you order from us, you’re getting a meal made with real care - both in how it’s cooked and how it’s handled.

Family First, Always

Working together as a family is at the heart of Wong’s. Some of us cook, some prepare, some take care of customers - but every part of the takeaway carries the same values: care, tradition and pride.

When you collect an order or answer the door to a delivery, we hope you feel like a guest in our home. Many of our customers we now know by name, and some children who once came in after school now order with their own families. Those connections mean as much to us as the food itself.

Proud to Serve Barry

Barry has been our home for years now, and in that time, we’ve built something far more meaningful than a business. We’ve got regulars who know our opening hours better than we do, kids who used to come in after school who are now grown up and ordering for their own families. We see familiar faces at the counter every week, and even if the order doesn’t change much, the chat always does. That connection is what keeps us going, especially on busy nights when the phone doesn’t stop ringing.

We never set out to be the biggest or busiest - we just wanted to do things properly, and to build something lasting. We still get excited when someone tries a new dish for the first time, or when a customer tells us our food reminds them of a meal they had abroad. That kind of feedback matters, because it tells us we’re staying on track. Our job is to cook good Chinese food, keep the quality high, and treat people with the same respect we’d expect ourselves. It’s as simple as that.

Worth the Drive from Cardiff

Our food brings people together from across Barry, Wenvoe, Rhoose, Dinas Powys, Sully - and even Cardiff. Being just a 25-minute drive from the city, we’re a popular choice for anyone looking for a Chinese takeaway near Cardiff that’s worth the trip for collection.
